Sergei Viktorovich Gonchar is a Russian former professional ice hockey player born on April 13, 1974. Drafted 14th overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, he began his North American career with the Portland Pirates before making his NHL debut for the Capitals on February 7, 1995, against the Buffalo Sabres. During the lockout-shortened 1994–95 season, he appeared in 31 games and recorded 15 points. In his first full campaign the following year (1995–96), he tallied 41 points in 78 games. In the 1998–99 season, Gonchar made history as the first Russian defenceman to score over 20 goals in a regular season. He remained with Washington until March 3, 2004, when he was traded to the Boston Bruins.

The following year, during the 2004–05 NHL lockout, he returned to Russia to play for Metallurg Magnitogorsk, where he reunited with future Pittsburgh teammates Petr Sýkora and Evgeni Malkin. After the lockout, he signed a five-year, $25 million deal with the Penguins on August 4, 2005. His time in Washington had set the stage for his later achievements, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2009, where he returned from a serious knee injury suffered against Alexander Ovechkin to play through a partially torn MCL.
