Carlson's path to the NHL began in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, where he played for the New Jersey Rockets before transferring to Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. There, he recorded 43 points in 59 games with the Indiana Ice of the USHL, earning a spot on the Second All-Star Team and All-Rookie Team. Despite committing to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he chose the London Knights after being drafted by them in the OHL. Before the 2008 NHL draft, he was ranked 17th among North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau. On March 25, 2010, he scored his first career NHL goal against the Carolina Hurricanes, tying an NHL record as one of three rookie defensemen to score that night.
